What Is Hair Transplant Surgery ?
Hair Transplant Surgery is transplant of hair follicles from donor site to bald area. Hair Transplant was for treating traumatic alopecia in Japan around 1939 by Dr Shoji OKUDA. Hair Transplant has come a long way; Dr Orentreich in 1956 has laid the foundation or modern hair transplant methods like FUT and FUE. He showed the Donor Dominance property of hairs, means when hair from the back of the scalp is transplanted in from grafts or hair bearing flaps. They grow like natural hairs and maintain bald resistance property.
Earlier Hairs were transplanted in form of plunges or hair bearing flaps. Plunges are the large group of hairs. As technology advanced methods like mini and micro grafting were introduced. Mini grafts of hairs were used to give high density looks and micro grafts were used to define frontal hair line to give a natural look. Mini graft contains 5-6 hairs while micro grafts are small consisting of 2-3 hairs.
In 90’s Follicular Transplantation Method was evolved. This method showed the dissection of follicular hair under stereo microscope and that follicular grafts were then transplanted to bald area.

During Hair Transplantation small holes and sites are prepared at bald area to implant hair follicles. Holes and Sites are created in such a way that the hair grows normal like natural hairs.
Donor Area: Hair strip from back of scalp is called donor area. Reducing scar to minimum visible state is one of the key factors in successful hair transplant. Before Starting, Hair transplantation area is marked for the requirement of hair grafts and based on that possible numbers of grafts are taken out.
Another milestone method in the field of hair restoration surgery is Follicular Unit Extraction. With huge success for Follicular Hair Transplant FUE method followed.
Follicular Unit Extraction: Most common Hair Transplantation that is carried out in large scale is FUE Hair Transplantation. In FUE Hair Transplant with the help of machine or device Hole is created around follicular unit and whole follicular unit is taken out and implanted in recipient area creating slit or hole. FUT method doesn’t damage hair density at donor area. A linear scar that is hidden by hairs after is created. While FUE method leaves follicle unit area dead and thus decreases hair density at donor area.

FUE method is successful in small hair restoration surgery. Because it takes to take out single grafts and implant in bald area, thus limiting it to small scale hair transplantation surgeries.
In Many cases FUE is combined with FUT method to extract Hair follicles from other parts in case there are insufficient hair follicles in donor area. But the survival rate of follicles in FUE method decreases.
